The Way to Happiness

Everyone needs to find something in their lives that connects them with things like compassion, kindness, simplicity, and love, because ultimately this is the way to happiness. Being compassionate and kind will change the way you look at the world. But the most important thing to remember is that kindness and compassion begin with yourself. That is, you must first teach yourself to be kind to yourself and to show yourself compassion. Only then can you have compassion and kindness for others.

I think they do it by moving one step forward and then two steps back. They take advantage of things our modernized world provides, like cars and computers. But they never forget where they came from. They understand and accept their place in society, and connections between members of families are still strong. Bhutanese revere old people for their wisdom. All Bhutanese remain close to nature and close to the earth. They live simply. This is very satisfying and very grounding, and it’s good for the soul.

We need to feed our inner lives. If we lose that sense of the spirit then we lose the spirit of community and we have lost a chance for happiness.

Living in Bhutan has taught me so much about living in the moment, being kind, learning to relax. These values are universal. I am not so much advocating for religion as I am for basic human decency: kindness. Kindness will save us.

Everyone can find their own sanctuary, a place— and not necessarily a physical place— where they can reconnect with themselves, away from a job, or everyday stresses. You don’t even have to physically go to a new place. You can go to a new place in your mind.
